For parents looking to find the perfect nursery for their little one, there’s a lot to consider. With increasing demand for childcare places, many parents are now planning far in advance – often before their baby is born – just to secure a spot!

Understanding what matters most to parents is essential. Nurseries need to ensure they’re not only meeting these expectations but also creating environments where every child feels safe, valued and inspired to learn. It’s about providing enriching early experiences that build strong foundations for each child’s future education and development.

In this article, we explore five key factors parents prioritise when choosing a nursery – and how nursery owners can prepare, adapt and shape their settings to meet these needs while offering reassurance and confidence to families.

Will the nursery and curriculum help support my child’s development?

It may seem obvious, but strong and consistent ratings from Ofsted, Care Inspectorate Wales or Education Scotland give parents the confidence that their child will be cared for in a safe, nurturing environment.

When it comes to the quality of the curriculum, every parent wants their child to receive the very best start to their educational journey. At Banana Moon Franchise, our nurseries deliver a bespoke curriculum tailored to each child’s individual interests and stage of development. We follow the Statutory guidance, recognising that every child is unique. Our approach focuses on building positive relationships and creating enabling environments that support all aspects of learning and development – ensuring inclusivity and adaptability for children with a wide range of educational needs and disabilities.

What safety measures are in place to keep my child protected every day?

Safety is essential – for both children and parents. At Banana Moon, we take it seriously at every level. We’ve partnered with Blossom to provide our trusted Parent App, giving families real-time updates throughout the day – from meal and snack details to nap times, daily activities and incident reports. Parents can feel reassured and connected, even when they’re not on-site.

Our nurseries also use biometric systems to ensure top-level security, granting access only to authorised individuals. This technology helps keep our children safe while providing parents with peace of mind. Additionally, our staff to child ratios are in adherence with the regulation set out by the EYFS, reinforcing our commitment to maintaining high-quality care and ensure that each child receives good attention and support:

  • 3:1 – 3 months to 2 years
  • 5:1 – toddlers, 2 to 3 years; in Wales it’s 4:1
  • 8:1 – 3 to 5 years

Plus, our ‘Little hearts, bright futures’ initiative has seen the installation of defibrillators (equipped with both adult and paediatric pads) in each of our nurseries to go above and beyond to protect our children and local community.

Safety extends beyond physical security too – it includes the care and attention we give to every child’s dietary, allergen and religious requirements. Food preparation is carefully monitored, and we have comprehensive policies and procedures in place to prevent incidents and ensure that every child’s individual needs and family preferences are respected.

Are the staff well-trained and qualified to care for my child?

The quality and consistency of staff make a huge difference for both children and parents. For children, having caring, skilled and familiar adults around them builds a strong sense of security and belonging. Young children thrive on routine and relationships – seeing the same trusted faces each day helps them feel safe, confident and ready to learn. When staff are well-trained and genuinely engaged, they can better recognise each child’s individual needs, interests and developmental stages, offering the right balance of care, encouragement and challenge.

For parents, consistency among staff provides reassurance and peace of mind. Knowing that their child is being cared for by a stable, experienced team allows them to build meaningful relationships with practitioners and communicate openly about their child’s progress.

At Banana Moon, our established brand attracts well-qualified and experienced team members to provide high-quality supervision and learning, ensuring no safeguarding risks and preventing staff from becoming overwhelmed. Our team members are also trained to support children with additional needs, creating an inclusive environment where every child can thrive.

Finally, we encourage parents to visit our nurseries, meet the team and see first-hand the caring and professional atmosphere we foster each day.

Does the nursery have facilities that truly meet my child’s needs?

Nurseries care for children across a wide age range – from as young as 3 months to 5 years old at Banana Moon – meaning they support children through a variety of important developmental stages. To do this effectively, nurseries must be thoughtfully designed and fully equipped to meet the needs of every age group.

A cosy, calm space for babies to sleep, feed and explore safely is essential, but so too is having spacious, stimulating areas for preschool-aged children, where they can move freely, be active and engage in meaningful learning experiences. Limited space or poorly designed environments can restrict children’s development and well-being.

That’s why nurseries should provide well-planned, flexible environments – places that adapt as children grow, offering the right balance between nurturing comfort for the youngest and exciting, purposeful learning for the oldest.

Are the costs and funding options clear before I enrol my child?

The demand for childcare is growing rapidly, and finding nursery availability can be a real challenge. Parents also need flexible childcare options that fit around their working hours and lifestyles.

In England, the government offer up to 30 hours of funded childcare per week for 38 weeks of the year, which parents can apply for once their child reaches 23 weeks old. However, there are eligibility criteria – for example, both parents must be working at least 16 hours per week. Additionally, a child’s date of birth is also a big factor, with funding only being available from the term after the child turns 9 months old. For example, if your child turns 9 months old in November, they won’t be eligible for funding until the following January.

In Wales, there are two options. The first is the Childcare Offer which gives parents and guardians of children aged 3 to 4 years up to 30 hours of free childcare each week, for up to 48 weeks of the year if they meet the criteria. The 30 hours is made up of at least 10 hours of early education, with the precise figure dependent on each local authority, and up to 20 hours of free childcare.

The second is the Flying Start Scheme which focuses on care for 2-year-olds in eligible areas, offering 12.5 hours of free childcare which is in the process of being rolled out across the country.

From September 2025, Scotland made some changes to their childcare funding plans by expanding their free hours from 15 to 30 hours of free childcare per week for children aged 9 months to school age if the right criteria are met.

Additionally, Funded ELC is available for 2-year-olds if criteria are met regarding factors such as Universal Credit or if the child has been involved with the care system, local councils are able to assist families in helping find the best childcare placements.

It’s also important to note that while this funding supports childcare costs, it doesn’t always make childcare completely free. Nurseries must clearly explain any additional charges, such as meals, nappies, extended hours or extra activities like trips and enrichment sessions.

Some nurseries operate on a term-time only basis, while others are open year-round, which may also affect costs. Transparency around pricing and availability is therefore essential to help parents make informed decisions.

At Banana Moon, our individual nurseries provide a detailed registration and fee structure which clearly outlines the length and type of care each child will receive, including any optional extras. This ensures parents have a complete understanding of the costs involved and can confidently plan their childcare and finances in advance.
