One of the biggest advantages of joining a franchise is that you’re not starting from scratch. People already recognise the brand, trust its reputation and understand what it stands for.
But in early years, national recognition will only take you so far.
Parents don’t just choose a nursery because it’s a well-known name. They choose it because they trust the people inside it, because a friend recommended it or because they’ve seen the team out and about at a community event.
That’s why being part of a national brand and being a local champion aren’t competing priorities.
At Banana Moon Franchise, we believe that as an early years provider, we have a unique opportunity to bring people together, create meaningful connections and give children a genuine sense of belonging within the places they call home.
Here’s what that looks like in practice.
Weaving strong community ties
We’ve never believed in keeping childhood boxed up between four walls.
All of our 50+ nurseries are passionate about building community connections via trips such as library outings or visits to the local vets. For many of our settings, one of their most cherished partnerships is with their local care home, creating bonds across generations.
Just as importantly, we bring the community into our nurseries. We’ve welcomed local police officers, members of the local fire department, doctors, dentists, schools and other professionals through our doors.
These visits help children build familiarity with trusted members of the community while transforming everyday learning into memorable real-world experiences.
Supporting communities beyond childcare
As well as building connections with local people and businesses, we believe it’s incredibly important to give back to those who might be struggling.
Our nurseries actively support initiatives like food bank collections, clothes swaps and charity events. They host multiple community-focused fundraising initiatives every year, including family fun days, coffee mornings, sponsored walks, bake sales and seasonal events – bringing people together and supporting causes that really matter to their communities.
Local families benefit from free parenting workshops on toilet training, sleep and behaviour, while nursery chefs provide food parcels and low-cost, nutritious recipes, helping families manage the cost of living and spend quality time cooking with their children.
Local people create local connections
One of the things we’re most proud of is how many of our team members come directly from the communities we serve.
Local recruitment doesn’t just support local economies – it helps ensure families see themselves reflected in our settings. In some nurseries, more than 10 languages are spoken by children and staff, creating a wonderfully diverse environment that mirrors the community around them.
What’s more, students regularly complete apprenticeships within our settings, inspiring the next generation of early years practitioners. Our apprentices are introduced to our own bespoke curriculum and way of working, helping them grow into confident educators from day one.
Giving local leaders the freedom to lead
A strong national framework is important, but we believe becoming a local business of influence comes from local knowledge.
Our franchisees place a huge amount of trust in their managers. After all, these are the people that understand their local community’s needs, preferences and challenges, making them best placed to tailor their nursery’s services and marketing efforts accordingly. This level of trust we place in our leaders is evidenced by the fact that three of our nursery managers went on to become directors of their own franchises.
By giving local leaders the freedom to make decisions that work for their communities, we’re able to respond to local needs while maintaining consistent standards across the UK.
Turning insight into action
That said, we believe local experience works best when it’s supported by data – which is where having the backing of a national franchise truly shines.
At Banana Moon, we equip our franchisees with practical digital and data toolkits, which make it easier for them to improve local presence while staying aligned with brand expectations.
Bespoke data dashboards help our franchisees to deep dive into the socioeconomic profile of the area (income levels, employment rates and the cost of living), as well as local population profiles (lifestyle choices and household composition).
Strong national campaigns, local impact
Across our network, our unified image and shared values also allow us to launch initiatives that make a meaningful difference to communities nationwide.
Safety campaigns like our ‘Bright futures’ initiative is proudly represented by all our nurseries. It started with ‘Little hearts, bright futures’ in 2023, which saw us install an automated external defibrillator at each of our settings – also available for community use during opening hours. Following the positive reaction, we grew the campaign with ‘Big moments, bright futures’ in 2025, equipping nurseries with LifeVac anti-choking devices.
How national brands win local hearts
In summary, the most successful franchises understand that ‘national’ and ‘local’ work hand in hand.
For nursery franchisees, building a name locally by supporting their communities is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense for both parties – ensuring the success of individual franchisees while boosting the overarching brand.
While our franchisees benefit from the support and standards of our national network, each of our settings has developed deep roots within the local community it serves.
Banana Moon day nurseries have become community hubs, demonstrating the positive role a franchise business can play at the heart of local life.
